Candy Corn Cupcakes!

Rory’s dad loves candy corn!  It is a year round food in our household.  His favorite thing to do with candy corn is to mix it with peanuts.  Rory will watch him eat it and ask for “daddy’s corn.”  I normally don’t like giving her any candy, but I have been slacking on my rigidness when I see those big eyes and crazy blond hair look at me.

Since Rory’s three favorite things in the world are “daddy’s corn,” cupcakes, and baking; I thought it would be to combine the three!

Materials needed:
yellow cake mix (and ingredients used to make the cake)
food coloring: red and yellow
white icing
white “see through” cupcake holders
candy corn

This was a very easy project, and fun for everyone!  We made a normal yellow cake mix, by following all the instructions on the package.  While we were mixing, we counted all of our “stirs” and talked about how we were stirring in a circle.  When we were done mixing, we divided the batter into two bowls.

One of the bowls will be a yellow color batter, and the other will be an orange colored batter.  We talked about making the colors.  The batter is already a “yellowish” color to begin with, but to spice it up and make it a glowing yellow.  To do so, I added a little bit of yellow food coloring, just to make it pop.   In the other bowl, I added some red and some yellow food coloring to make it the perfect orange.

Once you have the colors looking perfect, and your cupcake holders in place, you can begin to make the cupcakes!  (I didn’t have any cupcake holders in my house, so we just used our regular cupcake tins; which worked fine; however I would have liked for my cupcakes to have had better color.)  In typical candy corn fashion, put a little of the yellow cupcake batter into the cupcake holders.  Fill then half way full.  Then add some of the orange batter on top, filling it up to the top.  Bake according to the mix directions.

When they are done baking, let them cool on a cooling rack.  Once they are cooled, put a nice dollop of white icing on top.  Finish with a piece (or pieces) of candy corn.

Rory was so excited to see the cupcakes!
